What Rubrik makes
Rubrik sells backup as a security product and not as a storage product. Every copy is immutable from the moment it is made, and the system looks at the backups themselves: if tonight’s pattern differs from the weeks before, that is a sign something is encrypting. That shifts the conversation from how long a restore takes to the question of which copy is still clean.
Why Rubrik, and where it stops
Rubrik is defensible where a ransomware attack genuinely stops the company and there is a board that wants to know how long that then lasts: production, care, logistics. The detection on the backups is what you buy here, and that question (which copy is still clean) is the most expensive one in a real attack. Where it stops: it is steeply priced and built for scale. Below dozens of servers Veeam or NAKIVO does the same for a fraction, and then you are buying detection you could also do by hand.

- The quantityOn a larger batch the per-device price comes down. Twenty at once is a different conversation from two, even when everything else is equal.
- What has to be on itA device delivered with your settings, software and security costs more than a box, and saves an installation day per unit. That is a choice, not a surcharge.
