What Framework makes
Framework makes laptops that come apart: every part has a number, can be ordered separately and is replaceable with one screwdriver: the screen, the keyboard, the battery, the mainboard. The ports are modules you swap yourself, so the same machine has two USB-C ports today and HDMI and a network socket tomorrow.
Why Framework, and where it stops
Framework is defensible where a broken screen now means a new laptop and should not: education, an organisation with sustainability targets, a team that does its own repairs. Replacing a screen here costs a part and ten minutes instead of a repair process. The ports are the second gain, one model for people who need different things. Where it stops: there is no global service network and no next-business-day on-site service.
