What Cognex makes
Cognex is American and makes cameras mounted on a production line doing two things there: reading codes a handheld scanner cannot handle (a code etched into metal, a label that is skewed or damaged) and checking whether a product is right. That second one is machine vision: is the cap on, is the label straight, is the pack filled.
Why Cognex, and where it stops
Cognex comes into play where a fault is only discovered at the customer and that is too expensive: food, pharmaceuticals, automotive, any line with recall risk. A camera checking a hundred products a minute does what a person cannot sustain after an hour. Where it stops, and here that is the boundary: this is machine building. We do the network, the link to the production system and the storage of the images; placing, aligning and programming the camera is work for an integrator who does this trade.

- What has to be on itA device delivered with your settings, software and security costs more than a box, and saves an installation day per unit. That is a choice, not a surcharge.
- Delivery and installationTo one address or to fifteen sites, with or without on-site placement, with or without taking away what was there. That difference is in the price and it is yours to steer.
- Buying or renting, and for how longThe same equipment can be a purchase or a monthly amount across three or four years. That changes not only the figure but where it lands in the books, and it is the conversation with the most in it.
