What Atlona makes
Atlona, part of Panduit, moves picture and sound over the ordinary network instead of over separate AV cabling. OmniStream sends a source to any screen in the building using network equipment already installed, and Velocity is the management above it: which room is on, what is showing, who may do what.
Why Atlona, and where it stops
Atlona comes into play as soon as picture has to travel beyond one room: a building where a presentation in the hall also has to be visible in the canteen, a school, a hospital with screens on every ward. The gain is that no second cabling appears; it runs over the network already there. Where it stops, and this is the most important sentence here: AV over IP puts a heavy, sensitive load on the network. It asks for its own VLANs, multicast configured properly and switches that can take it. That is exactly our work, and it is why such a project starts with us and not with the screens.
